Accessibility

We want anyone who lands here to be able to read the page and get hold of us. This page sets out what the accessibility button on every page actually does, what we have built into the site, where it still falls short, and how to tell us when something is not working.

The toolbar

The accessibility button

Every page carries a round red button in the bottom left corner. Press it and a small panel opens with six options you can switch on for yourself. There is no account, no sign up, and nothing you turn on is sent to us or to anybody else.

A Reset button at the bottom of the panel clears the lot in one press.

Look for this, bottom left

Off · Large · Larger

Larger text

Press once for large, twice for larger, a third time to go back to normal. The whole site steps up with it: headings, paragraphs, buttons, the phone number and the enquiry form.

On · Off

High contrast

Turns the whole site black on white: the dark pages go light, every link is underlined, and the enquiry form boxes take a hard edge. Cards keep a solid black outline so nothing fades into the white.

On · Off

Underline links

Draws a line under every link on the page, so a link is never something you have to spot by colour alone.

On · Off

Readable font

Swaps our condensed headline face and our body face for a plainer one, and opens up the spacing between the letters, the words and the lines.

On · Off

Pause motion

Stops the small fade in as each section comes into view, and anything else that moves. Nothing is hidden by it: the content is simply there when you get to it.

On · Off

Highlight focus

Puts a thick amber outline around whatever the keyboard is sitting on, so you can always see where you are as you tab down a page.

Your settings

How your choices are kept

Worth knowing before you turn anything on, because it explains what will and will not follow you around.

  • WhereBottom left of every page. On a phone it sits above the call bar, so it never covers the number.
  • RememberedIn this browser, on this device. Open any other page on the site and your choices are already on.
  • No flickerYour settings are applied before the page is drawn, so you never see the page change under you.
  • Not an accountNothing leaves your device. Clear your browsing data and the settings clear with it.
  • This site onlyThese options change this website. They do not change any other site you visit.
  • KeyboardOpen it with Enter or Space, move with Tab, close it with Escape or a tap outside the panel.
The site itself

What we have built in

We have aimed this website at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We do not hold an accessibility certification or a formal audit, and we are not claiming one. What follows is what we have actually built and checked ourselves.

Keyboard

Usable without a mouse

Press Tab as soon as a page loads and the first thing you reach is a Skip to content link that jumps you past the menu. From there the order follows the page, and an outline shows where you are, before you turn anything on.

The phone

One tap to call Nathan

Every phone number on this site is a link, and a big one. On a phone it dials 0487 493 769 straight away, and the bar along the bottom of the screen keeps that within thumb reach on every page.

Motion

Your device setting comes first

If your phone or computer is already set to reduce motion, our small fade ins are off when you arrive. You do not have to find the toolbar first.

Images

Photos carry a description

The job photos and the pest photos have a written description behind them for screen readers. Marks that are only decoration, like the phone icon inside a button, are hidden from screen readers so they do not add noise.

Structure

Headings you can jump between

Each page has one main heading that says what the page is, with its sections in order underneath. The header, the main content, the menu and the footer are all marked, so a screen reader can jump straight to the part you want.

Your screen

It fits the screen you have

From a small phone to a wide desktop, nothing is cut off and there is nothing to scroll sideways to reach. Zoom in with your browser and the text reflows down the page instead of running off the edge.

Straight up

Where this site is not there yet

We would rather tell you than let you find out on your own.

  • Nobody independent has checked this site. Everything on this page is our own work, tested by hand. It is not an audit and we are not going to dress it up as one.
  • We have not tried every combination. We have tested on phones and on desktop computers, not with every screen reader and browser in use.
  • Our Facebook link leaves this site. How that page behaves is not something we control.
Feedback

Tell us if something is not working

If any part of this website is hard to use, or one of the accessibility options is not doing what you need, we want to hear about it. It is a fault like any other and we would rather fix it than leave you struggling with it.

It helps if you can tell us the address of the page you were on, the device or browser you were using, and what happened.

Call Nathan on 0487 493 769, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. If we do not answer please leave a message and we will call back as soon as possible.

Or send it in writing. The enquiry form has a visible label on every box, and only your name and your phone number are needed.

Pests don’t book ahead.

You can. Free quotes, no obligation, and Nathan answers his own phone.
